The jewel in the crown of the ancient market town of Petersfield, the Heath and The Pond have long been popular with families looking for an easy stroll with plenty to keep the children entertained.

The attractive village of Oakhanger is bordered by Shortheath Common, which has special conservation status in recognition of its many habitats. It also has a rather splendid play area right beside the start of this short walk.

Occupying a commanding position overlooking The Solent, Portchester castle makes a fascinating place to walk around in any season.

This walk starts at the pretty village of Cheriton where you will find a young River Itchen, a historical battle field, a pub and a secluded play area. It then crosses fields to reach the parkland of Hinton Ampner, where you can get a good view of the historical house and its gardens.

You will probably want to do this walk again and again as there are so many possible add-ons including a castle, a lido, a pitch and putt, a boating lake, a hilltop-folly, a wetlands centre and a destination pub.

The Canal Centre at Mytchett is an excellent place to explore The Basingstoke Canal. You will find plenty here to entertain the whole family including this easy walk around the tow path.
