The Basics

Distance: 4 km / 2.5 miles
Terrain: Fields, footpaths and quiet village roads. Minimal elevation. A couple of low wooden stiles.
Pushchairs: This route is not suitable for pushchairs.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome on this walk as well as at the cafe and recreation ground.
Refreshments: Bury Court Cafe is in a beautifully styled garden courtyard open Wednesday to Sunday, 9-4. The farm is also used for weddings and events, but if none are being held on the day of your visit, you are also welcome to explore the delightful English country garden.
Toilets: Toilets available for cafe customers.
Public Transport: Stagecoach 65 between Guildford and Alton - alight at Main Road and walk along London Road to the recreation ground.

A well-equipped play area in Bentley
Bury Court is well-placed on a footpath deep in the farmland between Farnham and Alton. It is a beautiful country-styled wedding and events venue that has recently opened a café in its courtyard. It makes a brilliant stop on a walk and this page will show you how to link it to the village playground in Bentley, making a complete afternoon out for the family.

The Route
Starting from the car park at the recreation ground, cross the field in a diagonal line, with the play area to your left, towards the far left corner nearest the road. Exit the recreation ground, join the pavement and turn left along London Road.
Walk along the road for around four minutes, before taking a left turn at the footpath marker just after the Bentley road sign with the silhouette of an archer and a National Speed Limit sign. The path will lead you into a field/meadow, which you should cross and then walk down a second field with a large oak tree to your right. At the bottom of this field, cross though the hedge/tree line and then turn left. Keep the line of hedge/trees directly to your left and then soon turn left again, crossing a flat wooden bridge over a ditch into another field. Walk diagonally across the field (passing a black post in the middle). Go through the gap in the hedge when you reach the far corner and then continue in the next field/meadow. Keep right and follow the path along the right-hand edge of the field until it eventually brings you over a low stile beside a gate and out onto the road.
Turn left and walk along the road. Keep straight at the junction with School Lane and continue until you see a sign pointing right for the church. Turn right here and then soon pass the church to your right. Just after the church, join the rough track and continue in a straight line until you reach Bury Court after about ten minutes.
Once you have enjoyed the cafe, you will need to initially return the way you came, down the track to the church. Continue past the church down Church Lane to the junction again and turn left, continuing to retrace your steps. Keep straight again at the junction with School Lane and just after it, look for a different low stile on your right next to a large gate. This is about 200 metres before you would reach the one you took at the end of step 2.
Follow the path along the right-hand edge of the field and at the other side, veer right to find yourself in the corner of the recreation ground.

Fancy a longer walk…
If you fancy a longer walk that starts and ends at the cafe, why not give this one a go? We call this one the ‘grown-ups walk’ as it won’t pass the play area and it does involve a fair stretch on quiet country lanes that have no pavements. But it does have some decent countryside views, fields and meadows and a little honesty stall selling a range of plants and produce for charity (bring some change).

Terrain: Fields, bridle paths and quiet village roads. Some hills and stiles.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome on this walk as well as at the café. Please keep them on leads through the sheep paddock.

Public Transport: There is no public transport to Bury Court - you would need to alight in the village and walk up Hole Lane and join this walk at Jenkyn Place.

The Route
Standing with the car park behind you and the entrance to the cafe ahead of you, turn right and follow the track. You will pass some horse paddocks to your right. Continue along the track until you reach the church.
After the church, veer right and follow Church Lane to the junction with Hole Lane. Opposite you, will be the entrance to Jenkyn Place. Turn right along the road, and just after the front wall of the property ends, take the footpath on your left.
Pass Little Jenkyn Place Cottage and then go through a gate into an enclosure. Veer right towards the far right-hand corner and continue along the path with the vineyards of Jenkyn Place behind the fence to your right. Soon, veer left through another enclosure and then through another gate covered in chicken wire.
Cross the bottom left side of a field with the hedge to your left. When you reach the gap in the hedge, continue in the same direction across the next field. At the edge of this field, you will reach a junction where you should turn right and walk with horse paddocks to your left. Turn left when you reach the corner at the top of the paddock. As you approach the next corner, look out for the footpath on your right going through the gap in the hedge. Immediately bear left on the other side and walk along the left edge of the field with Pax Hill Care Home behind the hedge to your left.
Next, go over a stile and then continue in the same direction. Go through the next gap in the hedge and keep roughly straight on in the next field once again. Initially there will be a gap, but after this the trees should be to your right. At the edge of the field, go right and then bear left. The yellow footpath arrows will guide you and you will now be walking into the trees of a little copse. Keep straight when you come out into the open and then head under trees again. Turn right at the end of the path and walk up the field, before turning left after a few metres out of the field over a bridge over a ditch. Keep straight ahead with an open field to your right and a tree line to your left.
Look out on your left for a large metal gate and a stile. Go over the stile and then over the next stile to your right. Follow the worn path diagonally across the field (keep dogs on leads due to ponies and sheep). On the other side of the field, go over the stile and out onto the road.
Turn right at the road which will turn into a track once you have passed Hussey’s Farm. This next section is nice and easy; follow Hussey’s Lane track for around 1.5 km / 30 minutes.
When you reach the road, turn right. It is a quiet country lane and you should follow it for around 1.5 km / 25 minutes. At the first junction that you reach, turn left and follow the road to the entrance to Bury Court.
