We love the play area at Herriard Green.
Street Croft Farm, south of Basingstoke, is a working farm with farm shop, café, animals and children’s games. As long as you plan to use the farm shop or café, your children are welcome to explore the farm and see the piglets, lambs, goat kids, chickens, highland cows, donkeys and more. If you want to make your day in the countryside even better, you can follow our linear walk to Herriard Green, a beautiful park with paths mown through wildflower meadows and a very good play area with one half for older children and another for younger children.
The Route
• Please note that Street Croft Farm is open Saturdays 9-4 and Sundays 10-3 as well as some bank holidays and select days in school holidays. Outside of these times, you will not be able to park at Street Croft Farm.
1. To start the walk, exit Street Croft Farm towards the road and turn immediately left along the pavement and walk with a hedge between you and the road. Turn left when you are opposite the church, and walk along Scratchface Lane. You will pass cottages and a number of business units before the buildings give way to a field. As you enter the field, there will be a cross path of tracks.
2. Turn left and follow the mostly gravel farm track along the permissive path on what was once a railway line. Follow the track for around ten minutes until you reach a kissing gate and the road. Cross the road and re-join the track on the other side, to the right of The Old Station. Continue up the track and just after you pass the electricity sub-station, go around the log barrier and up into a field.
3. Keep left when you enter the field and then soon go through the gap in the hedge. Turn left and walk along the side of the field with the hedge to your left and the open field to your right. When you reach the road, go around the barrier and cross over. The road is busy with fast moving traffic, however, the crossing is on a long, straight stretch and there are enough gaps in the traffic to make crossing on foot achievable.
4. On the other side of the road, go around the gate and continue in the same direction. The path will bring you out beside The Fur and Feathers. Turn left and walk along the pavement of King John’s Lane. Continue after the pavement runs out - this is a quiet country lane. Shortly, you will pass Herriard Village Hub on your left. Soon after this, turn left down Hockleys Lane. Continue past all the houses and at the end, join the slim tarmac path and go through the little gate into Herriard Green. Follow the tarmac path through the meadow and then turn right. The path will curve around the outside of the cricket pitch, passing a picnic area before bringing you to the enclosed play areas.
• This is a linear route and you will need to return the way you came to get back to Street Croft Farm.

Did you know?
The permissive path from Scratchface Lane follows the route of the Basingstoke and Alton Light Railway, which closed in 1932. There is very little evidence that trains used to come through here, but you should be able to make out the old platforms just after you cross Bagmore Lane.
